S60 Handphone - Understanding its limitation and advantages

Nokia N82 use S60, (Symbian 60) soft ware, which is a open software. It seem that this software has a lot of users, Major Handphone company use this software, Nokia, LG, Samsung etc as oppose the traditional computer company's use Window Mobile to power their PDA/Handphones/ Smart Phones. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . As a open software, it is also supported by alot of independent, these people, company, produce themes / skins , various applications, games, that can be use by all these handphone or devices, THE NOKIA N82 which i intend to get is one of such hand phone. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . These applications, games, themes, are available to be downloaded either Free, or as Shareware where by you pay a bit, or as full fledged software where you have to pay a fair bit, to use it. and is available from many websites or blogs. (See my earlier post on downloading games and themes) . .. . . . . . . . . ................. . . . . . . . . . .. . . . Browsing through the web, this Christmas day, i found this web, http://www.s60.com which is all about symbian 60 software, they even have what they call S60 Ambassadors, People which promote S60, in return of getting the latest updates, information, software, on the S60, which they write about and weekly/monthly there are prizes (games, even use of handphones, s60 of course) for being the best story teller or promoter. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. . . . . Well, "this look interesting" i said to my self, I will have to join up, as i believe in this, If you are spending your own hard earn money, on a product, use it to the fullest, to get the maximum for your money worth. I will do so as soon as i get my hand on the Nokia N82, to keep in touch with what new out there as compared with my Sony K750i after the initial downloads, i did not do any thing at all. .. . . . . . .. . . . . . . . I am thinking can i read my E - Books, on the Nokia N82, it seem i can, it can open txt, words, and also PDF files, I do have those e books, but the majority of my e books are in LIT format or shall i say Microsoft Reader format. Checking the web, unfortunately there is no support for this format, but there are a few person asking for it already. . . . . . .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Well, Getting a S60 handphone is easy, just go and buy, utelising it fully will be a task, you have to be computer savvy to handle it to download applications, and istalling them. You also have to be web savvy, to find out place where to get the applications and so on. . . . . I will take me time i believe to get to know this handphone / device well, as to use it to the fullest capability. GPS will be a new thing. Changing My Phone Carrier! From Maxis to Digi

I had use Digi Prepaid for may years (5 years or more ), then i change to Digi Post paid due to my increase bills, and the offer they made, New Hand Phone Free in return for a 2 year contract, 15 cent a min per call anywhere in malaysia, monthly fees of RM30. When after the contract finish, I move to a new job in the outskirts of Penang,. . . Bad / No Signal when i am in the building, When I want to make call, I have to move to certain areas to get signal. And the best is, I am the only guy using Digi in my Work Place. ;-) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . So I change to Maxis for better coverage, 2 year contract with a rebate, of RM20 per month for a Year, and another RM10 a month for another year, With Month Charges at RM30 and RM0.30 per min, initially the Sales man said it was RM0.15, but after is sign up it was RM0.30, i said never mind lah, what i wanted was the coverage. I also got my wife a supplementary line at RM10 per month. . . . . . . . . . . . Coverage was better, but there are still spots where i cannot get any coverage at all. Now it is after 2 years, and with the number potibility thingi comming in, i am thinking of changing back to Digi, Coverage have improve, though most staff here still use Maxis or Celcom, Some are thinking of going U Mobile, for the free calls. . . . . The Post Paid Easy Plan, The lowest, It now RM20 per month, and RM0.20 per min, No rebate, No Free Phone etc but seem to have a bonus if you spend a certain amount you will get a rebate, So I am thinking of setting it up together with my new phone, new carrier! Lower Monthly Charges, and even Lower Call Charges. Why not, I should be able to save say about RM20 a month or thereabouts. . . . . Have ask the Local Phone Shop guy to set it up! .. . . .. . and i am having problem controlling this blog!!!!!

Time for a New Phone! I hope a S60 Smart Phone

The Price of this new model smart phones are way out of my reach, however reach i may want them, so i started listing down what i want, A Smart Phone that have wifi and able to open words, excel and power point. Why Wifi, its because it is now so common, even at the Kedai Mamak, the Humble Coffee Shop, Restaurants, Hotel you have Free Wifi, and the Dap State Govt of Penang want to blanket Penang with Free Wifi ;-). Any other feature will be a added benefits.

Sony P1, Initial the P1 look attractive, as a colleague use one, i manage to lay my greasy hands on it and play around, did some research, and hey it look nice, touch screen, open and edit words excel, 3.15 camera with zoom, Qwerty input, why not i said, Cost around RM1400, which is the same with new model G900 said the salesman, then i heard that the op system is being stop, Is this true?

S60 device, Friends introduce the S60 range of Smart Phones, they say lots of software out there, to customize your phone, and lots of New Model Handphone use them, not like the sony op system, Nokia, Samsung etc use S60.

Nokia N82, After a bit of net research, I opted for a Nokia N82, its "boaring" candy bar look good to me, I am a bit of a conservetive person, dont like flip / slide etc as i am also a butter fingers, and Being a gadget freek, i think i will love the GPS, TV out capebility, 5 MP camera. Xanon flash, Cost = RM1280 (for a new AP set) but getting in the assecories like, car holder, car charger, case and Gamin map will cost me more. Not Cheep, but when compared to the P1, giving up the "not so functional" qwerty key board and the touch screen, for the extra goodies . Its not a new model, that why its cheep! and its a proven model, that being conservative again.

I did think to get a 2nd hand set, but when comparing the phone only price of around RM900, then getting in the original accessories, plus what i want it will come up to the same as a new one, so no point. Time to start putting the money to one side, as long as there are no emergencies, i am thinking early Jan 2009

Now i am already wondering what free software is out there that i should put in. Calling N82 / S60 handphone users out there, any suggestion and where to find this free software?

Birthday @ Corner Club

Happy Birthday Mom!

It was mom birthday, and we started looking for a wheel chair friendly restaurant to take her to. Having that in mind, I suggested Corner Club, as it was pretty wheelchair friendly and the food is good.

As it was quite some time we have been here last, I was surprise to see the ramps at the restaurant entrance have vanished. Still it is easy for my mon to step out of the car, and manage that one step up in to the restaurant.

That when we notice that the restaurant have undergone some extensive renovation, it bigger, brighter, neater, and that i begin to get worried on the food quality.

To cut the story short, the food quality remains, it's still as good as before, even with the new management, the renovation, all the usual menu items remain, and now you can even get tim sum at night here.

They dont bring the tim sum in carts any more, you order from a photo menu, and they steam them fresh and bring it out. I like that, many time i have to eat soggy tim sum due to oversteaming in the carts.

Price wise it remain the same. Any way we enjoy our lunch here! and will be back for more

Cross a Food Court and a Nite Market, you will get Red Garden. formerly a Pub, now this old mansion have been transform in to a food court, that concentrate on late nite crowd, as some of the stall were not even open or ready at 7pm. It have two entrance, One on Upper Penang Road, while the other is on the road behind, where New Cathay Hotel is.

I use the Penang Road Entrance which is inside a Car Park, Very Convenient, However the car park is pricy, RM2/- per hour.

Nice interesting Ceiling Decoration.

Oyster Omelette, Fairly good, Up to Standard.

Chicken Rice, Overall, Urg! No comment, however if you eat just the chicken it fairly well done. The Rice is some thing else though. Even My wife agreeed. Western Food, Better then average . . . . There also a few shops that is open just like a typical nite market. This place is a place where you have to go late, It cater to the tourist as well as the night drinking crowd, and there are singers around too.

There is a new Food Court in Town. I have not sample the food there yet, but i is a big food court, with all the usual hawker food and some. There is also a lucky draw or some thing. Location : next to Am Assurance along Burma Road, Just after Penang Plaza.

Food here is not cheep though, But it big, wide and airy, not hot at all, and many many car parks which is important. I will be back here to try it out. This food court even have a web!

Restaurants & Parking at AEON Seberang Prai

I like AEON Seberang Prai, (at Bandar Perda) because in bring to the Penang (Mainland) some of the frills of Penang Island Shopping and KL Type Restaurants. I was there last night, not too crowded, but not bad. There is good parking space with sheltered walk way and the access is nice.

It even have a lot of handicap parking, spots, however i notice some not too civil conscious drivers will park their car at this location, when i walk past there was this merc and kancil, and they don't even bother to park properly. In the Restaurant Corner you will get all the usual suspects such as KFC, Mac D, Nando, Kenny Rogers, Starbucks, some KL grown restaurants like Secret Recipe, Nandos, Laksa Shack, White Coffee, and some local grown restaurants . . . . What i notice is some of the restaurant are pack, Mac D, Pizza Hut, White Coffee,while some business are not so good, like secret recipe, nando, kenny rogers, Is this due to the Penang Price Factor, and perceive value for money? The Main thing however as a person in the Hospitality industry is that all the workers seem to be FOREIGNERS, even some restaurant all the SERVERS and the COOK are FOREIGNERS including the captain, supervisors, managers. . . . One Restaurant though, (a KL Chain, on the 1st Floor) seem to be making a effort in hiring locals, there was a small banner up, Manager 3K, Supervisor 2K, etc, To me Salary seem to be on the higher side of norm, but there seem to be no takers? What Up? Locals are shying away from working in Restaurants? etc.

Experimenting with Peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing

This last raya I was introduce to Peer to Peer File sharing, when i ask some one where to find movies to watch on the net. . . He immediately down load a Bit Torrent client for me with assorted plug in, and pointed me to a site to find files to download. . . I know that this has been going on for a long time, But this my first experience with this type of thing, and i have to say that, i have mix feelings on doing this. . . It takes so long in downloading files, a 400MB + file look, log on time of 7 days of 8 hours each, a 10.6mb file is still down loading at the 16% mark after more then a whole month!, with time log in of 13+ days and counting. Actually it when up 3% over the last two days. I have access to a IDSN (commercial type), which should be fast. . . Further quality of the files are also suspected, it may not be actually what you want, or in a different language. . . Is it worth spending all that time and log in money? In my opinion, I don't think so, It just not worth the effort unless it is for some thing money cannot buy.

Our PM have started to announce all the goodies in store for Malaysian, for the Budget 2009. I am watching the Live Telecast, and there seem to be alot of them. . . . this is what i think i heard, to be confirm by the main stream media. . . . 1. Additional Relief on Income tax for those with chargeable income of RM35K and below increase to RM400 from RM350 . . . 2. No Income Tax on Savings . . . 3. diesel road tax same as petrol . . . 4. Company Tax waive for Certain Staff Allowance especially transport . . . 5. better public transport , road tax for public transport at RM20, extend LRT's for KL only . . . . 6. Various incentive for making House Buying more affordable . . . 7. Reduction in Tax for certain food stuffs, like meehoon. . . . 8. Cigarettes tax increase by 3 cents or 60 cents per pack of 20's . . . . 9. Electrical Bill of Below RM20 waive . . . hopefully we will have cheaper food stuffs, for all, we will have to see what items tax have been reduce, and if there will be cheaper transportation for goods.

26th Aug 08, Public Holiday for Penang

it seems that 26th Aug 08, has been declare a Public Holiday, (via malaysiakini , the Malaysia Insider & NST on line) by Penang Chief Minister Mr Lim Guan Eng, to enable voters to vote in the P44, Pematang Pauh By Election. . . . . That well and good for the Govt Servants, a few Private sector employees may follow suite in granting the Holiday. But most in the Private sector, especially in the Hospitality Trade like Me, will be working as in our appointment letter spell out the number of Public Holiday that is available for us. I am not hopefull to get that extra one day off. . . . . For some its just 8 days, other may be more, at my current working place its 14 day, not bad already. . . . . Well every one will do what ever to get their ppl to win.

Defrag Down load and Hicups with Vista?

I finally got around to download a Disk Defragment program that does not take ages to do it job. Auslogic Free Disk defrag, is a speedy soft ware especially when you use Windows built in disk defrag It defrag my entire disk 160GB in just 10 min total. My old lap top use to take around a few hours. I have to say I am impress with the speed, once the disk is Defrag, then the program will start to sell other programs from Auslogic, a delete Junk Program and a Computer Optimizer, Fair enough I suppose.

I have other problems with Vista.

1. The Lap Stop just stop running, about 30 min ago, I saw a blue screen and then it reboot on its own.

2. The Slide Show also hiccups just like the windows media player with music. There is a error message that it cannot ”start up” will show, and when I set my photos as the screen saver a similar problem will pop up.

Still so far so good with this laptop. I have to get around to download the Office Printer and my own printer software soon.

Acer Aspire E Recovery & Acer 2920 Set UP

As mention in my previous post, E Recovery to Factory Software and configuration only took 10 min, and then it auto setup, around 30 min to reload all items. It when well . It took me the rest of the day to set up the computer to my liking and configuration.

First I set up the desk top to the a photo I took with my Fuji S700, and then set the screen saver to play the at random some of my best photos. (by left clicking on the screen and click on personalise)

Next Step was looking into the Side Bar, Remove all the standard items from there and started to download a Digital Photo Date Display, a Network Meter, a CPU usage meter , the temperature and CPU usage gauge, and a calculator. Unfortunately i could not fit in another gadget call a control system with clock, where I can shut down, lock the computer.

I then ensure the speaker is activated, open the start, and look for and check the Windows Defender to ensure that its active and set to scan at a time the Laptop will be on. I then uninstall the Mac Affee Anti Virus program (on trail) and then downloaded the AVG, install, and configure it to auto upload (at a time where i will be on line) and to auto scan (during the time i will be in meeting)

Next up is download the Microsoft Reader, and set the launch control to my home page and the web base e mail i use. Launch the Internet Explorer and set the home page as well. I then down load the VSO image resize, down load and configure the MSM instant Messenger, and down load win amp.

This plus my normal work took me from 7am till 6pm, there will more work to do tomorrow, with down loads for 2 printers, a HP380 which i own, and a Cannon for the office. I am thinking of downloading Firefox, Skyp,, Quick time, and some photo software.

My First Week with ACER ASPIRE 2920 and Windows Vista.

In brief Windows Explorer hang up on me a number of time which require shut down it does not seem to be stable, but reboot was fast thank to a better spec computer, so it was ok. Windows Program download was annoying as once it upload it keep demanding to shut down. Other then that it was thumbs up, Fast, user friendly interface especially to search for a file, though when a file is move, it remembers the old location.

I just enjoy myself fooling around with it. Downloading and installing and uninstalling various programs and gadgets and testing it out. I just have not burn a DVD yet but have try out burning a few photo’s to CD which was quite fast using windows however the Normal DVD player cannot read, I have to burn another DVD with the NTI CD/DVD Maker, which work.

E Recovery (Acer)

This program works, now i can reformat to factory specs any time and it just take 10 min, to reformat the C drive thought it take close to 8 hours setting it back up to the way i want it, Best is the data in D drive is saved, no need to down load it again or lost data.

Movie & Battery:

The Windows Media Player is good when you stop a DVD and eject it, and replace it the next day it will start up where you stop. That good that save time in searching for the place where you stop it. Running on fully charge battery it lasted the entire DVD of the latest Indiana Jones Flick

The Windows Media Player does not seem able to handle MP3 well, as it keep sssstuuurrring all the time. Win Amp works though with out any problems , Sound is loud for a lap top speaker, funny though loudness is better then movie.

Again Plus and minus, i keep looking for the stuff I need at the wrong place, as the controls are somewhat different. It actually better but not for some one who has use office for years. Those who has not use office will find it easy.....

Yes its smaller, and i keep typing (,) instead of (.) initially but i soon adept to the key board.

Conclusion :

Overall, I am happy with the package of Soft ware and the Notebook, quite well balance actually and you do not actually need anything else to down load unless you want to.........

Acer Aspire 2920 with Windows Vista Home Premium

MY First impressions first day:

A small Notebook, the size of a large hard cover book (dictionary come in to mind) Jet Shiny Black cover with a gray key pad area. The Store manager just took a minute to set it up and then explain to me on the soft ware that comes with it Vista Home Premium, and the Acer Soft ware especially the Acer Empowerment Technology. He further advice 8 hours initial charging time.

The notebook came without any CD’s due to it built in E Recovery (I will want to try it out say in a month time) which can restore it to its factory specs and software listed below in a small package weigh in at 2.04 kg (4.54 lbs.)

It came with a Padded Compartment Bag, a “Giant” Optical Mouse, and a adaptor powercord. There is a manual explaining the hardware and a bit on the acer software and a manual on vista. All very basic information while explaining what is new leave a lot hanging and unexplained.

I took it home and play around with it and started to set it up as i like it, firstly i uninstall the Anti virus (on trail), Acer Arcade , and the Windows Home and Student (on trail), replace with AVG and Open Office which I down load over the net.

Then i spent close to 10 hours downloading files from my old laptop via a 4g pen drive to the 2920.

Comments: it much faster, (then my old acer), and i enjoy using it setting it up and learning Vista Home Premium. A Sweet machine, better capability and able to accommodate my needs. Windows Vista need some getting use to, but i can see that it is a matter of unlearning XP, Vista I feel can be easier. Music is loud, and sound good to me, Playing a DVD, using the Windows Media Center is a breeze which also remember where i stop the disk last.

Basically the 2920 come with the following specs, at RM2599 currently

Time for a New Note Book Computer

It time for me to get a New Note Book computer, My current Notebook (which I purchase 2nd hand) is feeling it’s age. It’s symptoms include very Slow Boot up time (5min), It will slow down when switching applications, it Hangs when shutting down, Batteries is practically dead 30 min only and I just purchase another acdc adaptor for it. I have it close to 2 years already, and who know how long was if running before I purchase it.

It is a Acer Travermate 2300 series with a 15in screen, Celeron 1.5 Ghz, 40 gb Harddisk DVD – RW, with 256MB DDR, it has serve me well.

I have in fact been looking for a long time, various Notebook, sub note books and net books, but it still come back to a Note Book that have a bit of power to handle graphics especially now I am actively taking Photographs, and Small. Financial it is going to be a strain, but thank to cost saving I think i can manage, In view of my productivity time and that my home & finance minister want me to get a computer for my daughters.

One of my colleagues just bought a Acer Aspire 4920, for RM2499, which appear decent enough for me with Dou Core Processor 2Ghz, 160gb hard disk, 2Gb of DDR ram, and a 14 in screen. (it seem that the whole department staffs that need a computer, have purchase Acer for various reasons.) Then I saw the Acer advertisement for a Acer Aspire 2920-6A2G16 for just a RM100 more, same specs4920 as the except for a 12 in screen, Looks perfect for me.

I want to Prangin Mall, (Convenient car park, numerous computer shop), and started walking around. Shop 1 say yes we have, but to order, Shop 2 say, we don’t sell Acer, Shop 3 say yes, we have any time, in fact why don’t you try it out now, we have a demo set. Great!

And the best it is Pineapple Computer, a Computer shop that is around from the 086 days, Some how or other then my first 086 desk top, computer shop I purchase, does not last long.

The Manager demonstrated the Laptop to me and I tried it out, key pad is a bit smaller I think, I have to adjust. I then ask him what disk comes with it, as I had some trouble after reformatting my Travel Mate as i did not have the disk, He then surprise me by saying no disk, its all built in, Acer (or is it vista?) have a system where by you can recover the HD to original, ie reformat and reload all the programs to factory default. Just save your "Data" into the other partition of the HD he said it will all be there afther the format.

This I like, as when surfing the web, and doing work, my computer slow down on me, due to cookies, virus, spyware, malware and what not, and when I cant take it any longer, I will take it to the shop to reformat it again.

Well I will be getting the Notebook soon, after consulting with my Home & Finance Minister. J. My old Laptop will be for my 10 year old daughter to learn computers, after I have download all my item and reformat the hard drive.

On My way to work today, I pass by a Small Village/Town Post Office at 8.10am. There was a crowd of people all waiting for the post office doors to be open, which i assume at 8.30am . What all this people doing? Waiting to get the Vehical Petrol Rebate.

By wearing a special Pendent or Bracelet, you immediately can gain greater strength, flexibility, balance. So claim this company which did a few demo recently as well as last year. Can this be true? What Science is this?

The demonstrator have a series of test that he will demonstrate on you, a balance test, a few strength tests, a flexibility test. with the pendent or bracelet and with out the bracelet, and there is a water charging test, that all will seemingly convince you. Those test was done on me, and it actually seem convincing at that time.

However In my humble opinion, it is hard to quantify the results from this tests. It all is objective and not measure specifically. According to the demonstrator, results will vari from person to person.

The company have a website, videos of test with renown Malaysian sports persons, and a mat salleh sportsman, which they invite to demos here in Malaysia.

A few acquaintance have actually invested the money last year to purchase the pendents. However to me i have yet to see any "improvements" in their performance personally. One of them have actually purchase a pendent for her granddaughter and she say the kid is more active now.

Well if this is true, then Security and Enforcement agencies better look it to this matter urgently. By having Enhance security and enforcement personnel's, we should all be sleeping much better in our beds. ;-)

RM2.704 per liter of Petrol?

How much is per liter of Petrol now? All the papers, Main Stream Media, is saying it is at RM2.70 per liter, but the pump says it RM2.704 per liter? What up? See picture above.

Pay extra 0.4 cents per liter does not sound much but when apply to the whole industry? 10 liter you pay extra 4 cents, 100 liters pay extra 40 cents, 1000 liters it RM4, 10,000 liters you get RM40, 100,000 liters it RM400, you get the picture right. How much petrol is sold in a day? So far the MSM has not spoken up on this small matter, but its high time they did, Yesterday The Star have a big picture on the RM2.704, but made no comment on this.

That just show that the petrol companies do not respect our PM and government at all. The Ministry of Consumer affairs had better do some thing on this. I suggest that we make them pay 10 cents per every liter they sell to a fund for public transport, from the day of the increase till the day they stop charging in extra 0.4 cent per liter.

Bus companies have up price, and taxis, even taxi that run on gas also as per reports on TV. That Bad! Profiteering i think it is call.

Enough said.

Crazy Idea, How to make money from the Petrol rebate!

A group of us were just lepaking, and "discussing" the Petrol Price increase over teh tarik at the mamak, when some one came up with this crazy idea.

Invest in old cars below 2kcc which many are below RM5K now (12 years +), just park it at home, do not use it, and pay the road tax, and just the minimum insurance, and claim the RM625 per year rebate. You will get better returns then the bank intreast, or speculating in the share market for your "capital" outlay!

LOL, ;-) any one have a old cheep car to sell?. Or are there conditions to the Rebate to prevent this thing from happening?

They send e mail with notice of you winning lots of money and wants to know every thing about you, all your personal data etc.

After that, they will start their scam, they will say in order for them to send the money, you must show proff as such must send money to them to release the big amout to you. When you send the first lot of money they will want more and more.

Fund Raising, Wesak Day and others

During my visit to Wesak Celebration at the Malaysian Buddhist Association, (Penang) at Burma Road and the Siamese Temple at Perak Road, i form a opinion, which was reinforce just a few days later.

Why use school going kids to collect or raise funds? Are we trying to teach these children that begging works?

On Wesak day, At the Malaysian Buddhist Association, (penang) at burma road, just as you enter the gates, you will be hit by a bunch of school kids in uniform asking for donations, as you walk further inside there are disable people on wheel chairs or even on the floor, then the "official" collectors for the various fund, in all it seems o me that there is around 200 or more person just to collect funds at this venue. What a contrast at the Siamese Temple at Perak Road, I saw one beggar, that all.

A few days later, my kid came home with a request, "teacher say, we need to give money for the Myanmar people." My reply "Daddy already given", My wife later pass her RM1.

What type of message are we trying to send to our children? That it is ok to go around begging for money?

All those fund raising especially at the complexes, selling items etc? Not for me, I give directly to the source, that way i know that at least 50% of the fund i give goes to the people that really deserve it, not to some administrative fee or some other fee.

Traffic Jam at Green Lane exit.

Penang is famous for its traffic jam at the Green Lane Exit, when using the costal highway, especially when entering Penang Island via the Penang Bridge.

Years ago back when the only exit is the green lane exit, when i drove back from KL for the first time, i was stuck at this point for 1 hour, Imagine KL to Penang Bridge, 4 hours, then for a distance of around 2 km, it took me 1 hour.

With the New Jelutong Highway open all the way in to the Jetty, you did think that traffic at this spot will have ease. Yes it did, but it will still jam up, Why?

Well it is due to the drivers who jump que by driving on the left and then cramp them self in to the underpass toward green lane which is on the right lane. I will forgive those car with out of the state plates as they might not know which lane to use, but for the others.

I manage to get this snap of a car (circle) cutting in to the underpass as i was the passenger this day. I do hope that the Penang Police Chief or His traffic counterpart will place a traffic police man here, Oh the number of saman he can get will definitely exceed his quota for the month.

Termites!

The house I am renting now is having Termites! For the last 5 days i and my family have been sleeping with the fumes of the Termites Spray, as well as not having a ceiling in the bath room.

Replacement Wood being delivered

The saga started when our next door neighbour ceiling collapse, and my wife notice the termite pest control people came, and she started looking at the ceiling, She call our land lord which came by to collect the rent and told the landlord about it.

Results of Busy Termites having meals

Land lord said we know about it, and we said "please do some thing about it." Privately i told my wife, if nothing is done, we are moving. Result a man came and did some spraying and check the wood, and told my wife, do not park the car at the poach, it may drop down any time.

The Landlord was inform and work to replace the wooden beams started. We ask that person to take a look at other locations and that when the toilet ceiling was remove. Thank God after 5 days all the work is over, with all the daily cleaning but the termites are still around some where, our other next door neighbour is also doing some repair works.

The mess to be clean up

Quite a bit of the wooden beams was remove, and speaking to the repairman, he say this not the first time repair work have been done. In hind sight, i notice new houses being build in the area use aluminium beam, and the local neighbourhood store now say that no one want to buy these houses.

. Well Lucky I do not own the house, but i am worried of my furniture which are mainly wooden or chip board, i will have to do some treatment on my own.

Fort Cornwallis India Mee

One in a while I get offer of free food in exchange for some work done. Well on this day the reward was Fort Cornwallis Indian Mee or Hameed 'Pata' Special Mee. and i must say that it is good.

This stall is located at the Fort Cornwallis Food Court, so those tourist out there you can drop by when you visit the fort. Well patronise, especially by the navy guys (from the nearby RMN base), Though I have to give this warning, Do not order your noodles extra Spicy hot, unless you can really take it. (I come from a family that spicy is normal, extra spicy is good), It was "Explosive" hot, and had a bit of trouble the next day.

To accompanied the mee, was Ice Kacang, a small bowl topped with Ice Cream, which help to cool down the hot noodles that i have ordered.

Back to the Main Course, the Noodles was explosive spicy hot, serve on a metal plate, (to prevent breakage), but tasty and good, with generous topping of Sotong (cuttlefish) mmmm. I can feel the noodles going down. I will be back for more, though with out specifying i want in extra hot.

1 final advice, the food court is a bit run down, crack cement, old tables etc, so i would advice those who like to consume their food in nice bright food court to think about it before coming here, But then the crack cement, old tables, tree growing through the roof add ambiance to the street food you can get here.

This Char Koey Teow Stall use to be at the Maybank that is near Lorong Kulit, where is a sign that say Kimbley Street Char Koey Teow, Now having move here there a Sign here that Say Ah Leng Char Koey Teow.

The Coffee Shop

Located not too far away from the Padang, Police Station at Datuk Keramat, the Stall is at a coffee shop just opposite Federal Theater or now what is now know as Federal Place along the main road George Town heading to Ayer Itam, Parking is hard to get.

The Char Koey Teow here is as pricy at the one in Lorong Selamat, RM5 per plate normal and RM8 ++++ for special. The fella here use duck egg, and this stall is open for lunch. As with the price, what you get is extra big prawns. It is just as good as the stall in Lorong Selamat, without that long of a wait.

But to me it really a place i come too often, I bring out station big spending friends here as they are impress with the big prawns.

Lorong Selamat Char Koey Teow

Reputed at the Best Char Koey Teow in Town, a blog recently comment that the stall move shop just a few shop a way in a new coffee shop, As i was in town and need a urgent fix of char koey teow, i drop by and try out the new shop.

Now is this the original char koey teow? I am a bit, 50 50 to say either way, though to me it that this stall have loss some taste, but it look like the same person cooking it, and charcoal fire is use. I only been here once. It's still good, (dont get me wrong) but a bit lacking in taste on this day.

I like the new coffee shop though, its clean. I had the normal Char Koey Teow which is 50% more then what us penangite usually pay for char koey teow. ;-) as the special is just only extra prawns and stuff. A bit disappointing is the lack of Cockles. which to me is the highlight of Char Koey Teow.

How to get here?, simple, look for the UMNO Building, or the Pakistan Mosque, Lorong Selamat is just next to the UMNO Building.

I will need to confirm by trying out the stall at the original shop.

Nasi Ayam from KFC

Now a days Fast Food Chains is looking at the humble chicken rice or nasi ayam as a potential money spinner. You have the Chicken Rice Shop, Ayammas and now we have International Kentucky Fried Chicken serving up this dish.

Why? I suppose all Malaysian eat chicken and like rice. KFC version of chicken rice is their basic set, but instead of the salad and mash potato, they give you the chicken flavoured rice, and chicken soup in a set with their fried chicken.

I tried it out, no a bad combination, it should do well, with one clause, the rice have a plasticky flavour to it? How come, No QC Check? KFC should look into this seriously as is spoiled everything. The rice was nice a flavour full, though adding a extra rice cost RM1.50/- but for that plastic taste and smell. Urg! I don't think i will be back for more of the Colonel Chicken Rice

Keropok lekor is a commonly found Deep Fried Fish Flavoured Fritters, in the shape and size of a "finger" in the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Eaten as a snack, with a dip of chillies sauce it is a good source of protein as it is made from fish mix with with flour.

It is unusual for it to be found on the west coast especially in Penang, there for my surprise when i saw a stall selling this at Carrefore Prai, and at RM1/- per cup but smaller in size (Bite size). Having tasted this keropok when i was in kuantan. I have to say that this product here is about just as good. I will be back for more especially at this price, and that it is prepared in a hygienic way. I hope we will be seeing more of this Franchise around.

I drop by with my family at the other Delima Coffee Shop (the old one) and while the place is small and is just the corner lot beside the 4 D shop, the food is good, Penang Price. I prefer it over the other coffee shop which i posted earlier, i will be back for more.

Ching Ming 2008 Part 1

Last week on Sunday, It's was off to the various places for the family annual ching ming do. First we were at the Beow Hiang Lim Temple in Ayer Itam and then to the Christian Cemetery at Western Road and then Lastly to the Po Tay Temple at Bagan Jamal.

Fruits Stall

This year we actually when for cheng ming 2 days after the actual day. but being sunday the crowd were still around. We manage to do the shopping earlier, for fruits, and the joss items leaving just the food stuffs and flowers for the last moment.

This resulted in a pretty full car boot, after a container of water and the vegetarian food stuffs. At the 2 chinese temples we provided prayers and offerings.

It's getting harder to go for Ching Ming, 3 Kids to handle and 2 of them are young ones, but we still have to do it. Big Brother took us to Corner Club for their Tim Sum, Pretty good, Located at Gurney Drive.

Excellent Koey Teow Th'ng at Nibong Tebal, Penang

Penang Culinary Experience is found every where, Usually on the Island, but once in a while you can find them on the main land. Some how or other, Mainland Penangites seem to get to enjoy nice Koey Teow Th'ng, (Flat Rice noodles in Soup), This Kopi Tiam at Jalan Siong, Nibong Tebal sells only Koey Teow Th'ng and it is excellent.

The Dish is made with fresh ingredients such as prawns, pork meat ball and others parts as well, a Normal will set you back by RM3.50 and a Special by RM5.00 (thought with the price increase of noodles you may have to pay more). Kindly note that this is the only dish avaliable here so if you want some thing else sorry.

How to find this place you ask? Nibong Tebal is a pretty small town so it's not to difficult, If you enter town from the North, which is via the Railway Station, (tosai), Keep to your left, and near the end of the main road (way pass the Maybank) there is a small lane on the left, (lorong Siong) which is one way, drive up that lane till close to the end.

I had some nice Penang Laksa at Sungai Bakap Town, at a Road Side Stall, Just the other day.

Location: If heading south, turn left, if heading north turn right, at the only turning in the Sungai Bakap town, drove straight till you see a temple, drive in and park, you will see the laksa stall, they also have Chendol here, which goes well with the laksa.

Penang Lakas is Round Rice noodles serve in a spicy sourish fish soup, garnish with cucumber onions and salad cut in Jullian, should be eaten with prawn paste.

Chendol is another famous Penang food, Mini Pandan Flavored Dumplings serve with coconut milk, and gula melaka, (coconut brown suger) and ice.

We were at the Beow Hiang Lim Temple, for Ching Ming (prayers for my ancestors) just a few day back and at a certain corner of the Temple Grounds, I could see Kek Lok Si, or Temple of the Supreme Bliss, with its Kuan Yin Statue, which is undergoing works.

The Kuan Yin Statue or Goddess of Mercy Statue, looks like it is being enclose in a cage! Which lead to to entitle this Photo "Cage Mercy".

I use to take night photos back in my student days, using a Pentax K - 1000, I manage to get beautiful Night Photos of Geneva, and Montreux in Switzerland, So I decided to try out how well the Fuju Fine Pix will handle Night Photos.

At my favourite Burger Stall at Tanjung Bungah, (Previous Posts, Label Burger), i have a good view of Paradise Hotel, I decided to shoot the Roof Neon Signage, I brace the camera on the roof of my car, set it to "Night" for one Shot and "Auto" for the other. Set the self timer and shot away. Result: The "Auto" Shots were "Hazy"around the signage but more of the building can be seen. The "Night" shot (photo above), it is clear.

For my 2nd Trail, I took a photo of what i call, Sky Mansions, at Pearl Hill, (That a future Post), at maximum zoom and using the "Night" Setting, The above is the result, Clear view of the House Balcony.

This create my next problem, where to find beautiful pictures of Penang at night to shoot? This is where i can think off.

1. Prangin Mall Roof Top Parking?

2. Gurney Drive (Evergreen Hotel) shooting toward Bagan Jamal?

3. Esplanade? Shooting the Town Hall etc

4. Queensbay Mall area, toward the Bridge

5. Using the Emergency Stops on the Penang Bridge. ;-)

ATM & New RM50 Notes

What with our new malaysian RM50 note, ATM does not recognise them, and that has been going on for 3 months. The above photo is a explanation by City Bank that the New RM50 cannot be use for their Deposit Machine.

Now if it is only one month after the new note is introduce, i can understand, but this is already 1/4 of the year, What up? Banks in Malaysia does not live up to the expectations. What it one has only the new notes, so we cant pay, but if we cannot pay the bank will penalise us right? I prefer bank with teller, not machines, we are human beings.

@ PhotoShoot is my Blog on Amateur Photography. (Snapshot is my Learning Blog.) I was bitten by the Photography bug, thanks to my elder brother, 30 years back. He gave me a permanent loan of a Pantax K1000, SLR (I actually still have it), and I purchase a 80 -200 zoom lens.

For the next 3 years while studying in Switzerland, I was shooting a roll of 36 every month, on top of being the school photographer. That cost me SFr 50 per month inclusive of Printing 3R photo and the Flim. (SFr 1 = RM 1.40 at that time), which is almost my entire monthly allowance.

I stop when I came back to Malaysia and started working, as my Pay check is barely enough to cover expenses and other priority like car, dating and family came up.

Now with the maturity of Digital Cameras, gives me the opportunity to restart this hobby at affordable price. Low price camera from Lelong.com, A blog to share the photograph, instead of printing it out, have brought the cost of this hobby down though it still costs for memory cards, storage, batteries, and the prints you do actually need etc.

The Fuji FinePix S5700, while not being a DSLR, is a extremely capable camera considering it price, It’s 10 X Optical and 4.8 X Digital zoom with 7.1mp give it the ability to reach out and shoot candid shots with out your target being aware of it even in low light condition. Though it picture can be a bit grainy, but better a slightly grainy shot then loss memories.

I achieve this slightly grainy and shaky photo, with the “target” around 200 meters away with all the zooms being set on maximum ie 10X Optical and 5 X Digital, (which frankly is not a good idea), further It’s a hand held shot with out any support.

It’s Super Macro enable me to photograph a close up of a Fly on a Tomato Sauce Bottle, for the photo see the earlier post, Super Macro Mode.

I hate the sight of torn flags being flown. In general, we put up flags to show our loyalty, our respect, to instill loyalty. Torn Flags show disrespect, It is a disgrace. I feel that those who put up flags must be responsible enough to take them down when the flags show sign of ware. For me Flags must be taken down at dusk and place up at Dawn, at least in place where I was the manager in charge.

Low Light Trail for the Fuji FinePix S5700

Fuji FinePix S5700 performance in Low Light / Night with Lighting Conditions, I am satisfied with it performance especially when Compared with my camera phone the SE K750i.

Auto Mode, with 10X Optical Zoom in two different Light Conditions, Time Difference of around 15 Min.

This Photos are taken "Snapshot Style" on Auto with out any Zoom, without looking at the Display and No Flash.

As long as there is no direct light source, the photo came out good, not grainy and details can be clearly made out. I will have to try to shoot bracket shots, and try out a star cross filter. More Experiment is in Order.

Environmental Unfriendly Lorry

How can this lorry be on the road considering the amount of Black Smoke it is emitting? JPJ and the Transport Ministry should look into this very seriously.

My coworker say that this lorry is not too bad actually, there are worst offenders, just the other day he say that he saw a lorry that is emits so much smoke that he could not see the road! This snaps were taken on my way to the Post Office (Pos Laju) to get my new camera.

The Picture Below is a Driver who like to jump que by taking the right turn lane to be infront of the que, Unfortunately for him, I actually wanted to turn right, and created a ruckus as the light was green and he stop, so he got no choice but to go to the front, By that time the light have turn green.

First I get stuck behind a smoking lorry, then i get stuck behing this que jumping driver. Bad Trip

Fortunately for this driver, the Traffic Cops did not see this, I know the Cops cannot be every where but these guys deserve getting saman.

Ching Ming 2008

It's that time of the year again, to visit our ancestors resting sites & to clean them up, Ching Ming we chinese call it, (further explanation see last year post!) Have made preparation to go on the 6th April, Other folks are going early, today is Sunday 30th March, and the roads to work (which past 3 graveyard) is barely moving at 8am!

I must say that the Fuji S5700 does a decent job in hazy / high contrast situations.

Note: Found a image resizer, though it a extra step, down loading photo is now faster due to small file size, 2Mp file size is still ok though its slow, now its flys. If only blogger allows us to down load multiple files at a time and we can indicate where we want the photo's.

Footnote: I started blogging a year ago, I must say it's a expensive hobby besides the streamyx access fee.

Gadgets - Fuji FinePix S5700

This is my latest gadget, a 7.1mp Fuji FinePix S5700, with a 10 X Optical Zoom, 5 X Digital Zoom. Now I can start taking more serious photos. The SE K750i is a adequate camera phone but not in low light conditions, and it cannot zoom. Once i can get the hang of it i will start another blog for special photographs. Frankly I use to love taking photo in Low Light conditions, 25 years back.

I purchase this from Lelong, from a Merchant "kohwp's Online Store" at this link http://www.lelong.com.my/merchant/default.asp?userid=kohwp. for a serious discount of the usual retail price. The Camera is a demo set, as such, i have to consider it use, and i "won" the auction just below the Quick Grab price.

Now usually i will not indicate who i purchase it from especially if it from Lelong. but I have to make a exception this time as frankly this person deliver what he promise. I email asking for additional details, reply within 4 hours, I Bank in the Money and e mail him at 1pm, by 9pm he e mail back that he has posted the item (Poslaju) and gave me the trekking number (Thu). I receive the item two days after that (Sat) because the item arrive at the local pos laju distribution center after the Posman have left on Friday.

What i got is the Camera, a Usb cable, a CD, and a User Manual. There is No Camera Case, No Lens Cap, No Strap, No Memory Card, No batteries. The Camera arrive with a slight Mark on the Side see photo below. (Which is to be expected for a demo set).

I purchase 4 AA Alkeline Battries, a card reader and a 2 GB SD card to start off. My additional shopping list will be, camera case, lens cover, camera strap, rechargeable battries and charger, lens hood, & a polarize filter. I will reuse my old trusty tripod which is 25+ years old if i can find it>

My working place resident Cat, the one we all call the "Resident Manager" have given birth to 5 baby cats, of all place, in a giant vase. Here a Picture of them, so small and cute!

I am surprise by the clarity of the picture, taken by my SE K750i, using the build in LED "Flash", and zoom in by enlarging and cropping the photo.

A Popular food among malaysians, as most malaysians can eat chicken and rice is the staple diet. Now Fast Food Chains are trying to cash in on this trend. The Chicken Rice Shop (earlier post) d0es it quite well. So I was game for more Fast Food Chicken Rice when my wife said let try this one out.

This reputable Fast Food Chain have a few different sets, We took the 2 person set, and took our seat, Food was brought over within 10 min. So far so good. The Chicken (Roast), Rice, Chillies Sauce, Beansprouts, and Beancurd. All for below RM20/-.

Well all was good and delicious, but for me it was a let down due to the chicken. Its over cook, and dryish. Dont get me wrong, the chicken was serve warm and delicious, just that i feel that it's was way overcook. Not my day i think.

Datuk Seri Radzi Sheikh Ahmad, who was dropped from the Cabinet, has resigned his position as Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN) secretary-general.

Datuk Anifah Aman sprang a surprise tonight by turning down his appointment as Deputy Transport Minister.

Two deputy ministers -- Datuk Seri Tengku Azlan Abu Bakar and Datuk Anifah Aman -- have thrown a tantrum and declined to take up their appointments, claiming they are "senior enough" to be made full ministers.

What Childish Behavior, Not Selected, resign party post , Selected but not given full post, decline, Hoi! Who do you think you are. That just shows, that the party they represent is full of Childish Persons! What important is their own needs and whats, Not the Country and Rakyat. It the PM prerogative to select you for which ever position. Appointment to Cabinet to be a Minister or a Deputy Minister is not a Reward, it is National Service of the Highest Order!

PM, just chuck them out will you, re select those who really what to work!

And further to that

Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil, who was dropped from the cabinet yesterday, found herself "back" in the administration hours later. As advisor!

That nice, I understand that it has all the perks of a minister but none of the responsibility, I want that too.

I have not have dinner in this area (Jalan Delima, Island Glade) for a long time, to be accurate before I started blogging, and surprise surprise, the place where i had tim sum with my cousin is no longer there (not that i wanted a bite there) In fact before I took my cousin there, it was even a longer time, 15 + years.

This area use to be a favourite of my family, long a go. Why did we not come back here? Traffic and timming i guess. Getting there is a hassle from Ayer Itam and Tg Bungah and cannot find proper car park, but its sure convenient if you are comming in from the Main land.

. Any way there is a new coffee shop, in this block of Shops, Everthing looks new, I did not get the name by the way, but in general the food here is good. (By the way, I came here on the Night of 7th of March 2008. Just pre elections)

This is what Penang lang call Laksa, Thick Round Rice Noodles in a Sourish (Asam) base fish soup with Prawn Paste. The Best I tasted for a long time. Yum!

Read a report in the Star / NST (14th & 15th March 2008), that

. 1) the 11 Opposition Reps will call the Federal Government to scrape all the Mega Projects Plan for Penang as the Rakyat have chosen no development as they have voted other parties in.

2) the Penang Port Sdn Bhd, is suffering losses of RM14M a year, and wants the Federal Government to.

a. Transfer the Ferry Services to the State Government to bear the loss.

b. Increase Price of the Ferry Services to reduce the loss.

c. Close Down the Ferry Services.

3) Pro NEP, Demonstration by 1000 persons at Komtar.

Snapshots wonder; 1) Does voting for other parties by some of the Penangites means that the entire Penang, including those who voted for you, and did not vote at all, do not want any Development? Do you want to deprive those that voted for you as well. Kindly Refer to our PM, Your Party Chief, and State Chief, He said otherwise last night on National TV.

2) How did you guys a Private Company under the Finance Ministry get the contract to Run the Entire Port, its there some thing involve in like the understanding of running the Ferry Services? After the Elections (08), First, we had problems in Perak and Selangor, with the Loose Coalition of DAP-Keadilan-PAS, now we have trouble up in Perlis. Among The Last BN held State to announce and swear in their MB.

"The Raja Perlis has consented to the appointment of Bintong assemblyman Datuk Dr Md Isa Sabu as the new Menteri Besar of Perlis, replacing the embattled Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim"

look like BN and even the BN top party is just like DAP-Keadilan-Pas grouping. Fighting over positions. (worst for them, having been in power for so long, should be united by now)

I thought That the Circus have gone home, but it is still here in Town, and look like it will be here for a much longer time. Even our PM has been call to step down, together with MCA and MIC president among others.

Poor Tan Sri Koh, He wants to step down, but it seems that Gerakan want him around for a longer time. I respect Tan Sri Koh, he a real gentleman, a very rare breed. May be that why Gerakan want him.

New Penang government announces economic reforms after election victory By EILEEN NG, AP, PENANG, Malaysia --

The new leader of Malaysia's Penang state announced major reversals in policy Tuesday, including open bidding for government contracts, after his opposition party won elections for the first time in four decades.

Lim Guan Eng, sworn in for a five-year term as chief minister of the northern state Tuesday, also said his government will review a a 25 billion ringgit project to develop the city center of Penang island, which has raised concern among residents.

Lim's opposition Democratic Action Party won control of Penang in Saturday's election, unseating the National Front coalition that had been in power since 1969, in one of the biggest electoral upsets in Malaysia's history.

The reforms are part of the new government's "agenda for change to re-establish rule by the people," Lim said in a statement released soon after he took control of the state, the site of many multinational electronics companies such as Intel and Dell. Besides being the country's industrial heartland, the island of Penang is also known as its tourism jewel. .

It is the first time the Chinese-based Democratic Action Party has come to power in any state in Malaysia, where 12 of its 13 states have always been under the National Front, a coalition dominated by the Malay-based party representing the country's majority ethnic Malay Muslims.

Besides Penang, the National Front also lost in four other states to a three-party opposition coalition of which the DAP is a member. At the federal level, the National Front's traditional two-thirds majority in Parliament was reduced to a simple majority as the opposition alliance boosted its strength from 19 seats to 82 in the 222-member house.

Lim said in a statement that his government will do away with the New Economic Policy, an affirmative action program for Malays, in awarding state contracts. .

"We will run the government administration free from the New Economic Policy that breeds cronyism, corruption and systemic inefficiency," Lim said in the statement, which effectively pledges to turn upside down most of National Front policies. .

"We will implement an open tender system for all government procurement and contracts," he said, referring to the practice of state contracts being awarded only to ethnic Malay-based companies in secret tenders.

"We will also practice transparency by uploading information of such tender bids in an Internet portal to be set up in future for public access," he said. .

In other reforms, Lim said all state government members and civil servants will be required to publicly declare their assets. .

"This is a government that is based on democracy. This is also a government that believes in equal opportunity and social economic justice. We are here to build a dynamic Penang for all," he said.

He said he will also seek to restore elections to appoint local government councils, which until now were appointed by the government. .

Lim pledged to remain investor friendly and take steps to woo foreign investment that creates high paying jobs.
