Red Garden, George Town, Upper Penang Road

Cross a Food Court and a Nite Market, you will get Red Garden. formerly a Pub, now this old mansion have been transform in to a food court, that concentrate on late nite crowd, as some of the stall were not even open or ready at 7pm. It have two entrance, One on Upper Penang Road, while the other is on the road behind, where New Cathay Hotel is.

I use the Penang Road Entrance which is inside a Car Park, Very Convenient, However the car park is pricy, RM2/- per hour.

Oyster Omelette, Fairly good, Up to Standard.

Chicken Rice, Overall, Urg! No comment, however if you eat just the chicken it fairly well done. The Rice is some thing else though. Even My wife agreeed. Western Food, Better then average . . . . There also a few shops that is open just like a typical nite market. This place is a place where you have to go late, It cater to the tourist as well as the night drinking crowd, and there are singers around too.

Neww BT Food Court

There is a new Food Court in Town. I have not sample the food there yet, but i is a big food court, with all the usual hawker food and some. There is also a lucky draw or some thing. Location : next to Am Assurance along Burma Road, Just after Penang Plaza.

Food here is not cheep though, But it big, wide and airy, not hot at all, and many many car parks which is important. I will be back here to try it out. This food court even have a web!

Fort Cornwallis India Mee

One in a while I get offer of free food in exchange for some work done. Well on this day the reward was Fort Cornwallis Indian Mee or Hameed 'Pata' Special Mee. and i must say that it is good.

This stall is located at the Fort Cornwallis Food Court, so those tourist out there you can drop by when you visit the fort. Well patronise, especially by the navy guys (from the nearby RMN base), Though I have to give this warning, Do not order your noodles extra Spicy hot, unless you can really take it. (I come from a family that spicy is normal, extra spicy is good), It was "Explosive" hot, and had a bit of trouble the next day.

To accompanied the mee, was Ice Kacang, a small bowl topped with Ice Cream, which help to cool down the hot noodles that i have ordered.

Back to the Main Course, the Noodles was explosive spicy hot, serve on a metal plate, (to prevent breakage), but tasty and good, with generous topping of Sotong (cuttlefish) mmmm. I can feel the noodles going down. I will be back for more, though with out specifying i want in extra hot.

1 final advice, the food court is a bit run down, crack cement, old tables etc, so i would advice those who like to consume their food in nice bright food court to think about it before coming here, But then the crack cement, old tables, tree growing through the roof add ambiance to the street food you can get here.

Nasi Ayam from KFC

Now a days Fast Food Chains is looking at the humble chicken rice or nasi ayam as a potential money spinner. You have the Chicken Rice Shop, Ayammas and now we have International Kentucky Fried Chicken serving up this dish.

Why? I suppose all Malaysian eat chicken and like rice. KFC version of chicken rice is their basic set, but instead of the salad and mash potato, they give you the chicken flavoured rice, and chicken soup in a set with their fried chicken.

I tried it out, no a bad combination, it should do well, with one clause, the rice have a plasticky flavour to it? How come, No QC Check? KFC should look into this seriously as is spoiled everything. The rice was nice a flavour full, though adding a extra rice cost RM1.50/- but for that plastic taste and smell. Urg! I don't think i will be back for more of the Colonel Chicken Rice

The Other Delima Coffee Shop at Island Glade

I drop by with my family at the other Delima Coffee Shop (the old one) and while the place is small and is just the corner lot beside the 4 D shop, the food is good, Penang Price. I prefer it over the other coffee shop which i posted earlier, i will be back for more.

Butterworth Food Street

Butterworth Food Street is located at Taman Chai Leng, Seberang Prai, It is just around 100 meters from Pearl View Hotel. Just follow the road beside the road, till you come to a large coffeeshop (on the left), the Food Street is just behind it.

I pick the wrong day to pay a visit, the 5th day of Chinese New Year (2008), most of the stalls were close, and prices were up. Imagine RM5 for a plate of Char Koey Teow, and RM11 for 2 pax duck rice. Urg! and most items were sold out by 9pm. The Stalls and coffee shop in the area were pack.

Overall the food here is compareble to Penang Island Standard, which accounts for this street being the favorite for most people here.

There is a Koey Teow Th'ng Stall that open only after 9pm, that is the best i ever tasted.

New World Park - Phase 2

The 2nd Phase of New World Park is now open. I decided to drop by for a bite and at the same time to survey the place at night as i understand that there are music performance at night.

Coming in from Burma Road, I turn in via the front entrance to the parking area at the back, Well with only part of the new phase open I have difficulty in finding a Parking Place, The Guards were not to attentive at night it seems.

The Food Court was doing roaring business with most of the stalls open, there were hardly any space to sit, the clearing of table were slow.

there were a number of new restaurants, serving a wide verity of food (indian, penang, western etc)as well as some night life places, a Internet cafe, and a few shops, One of the outlet is Gee Hiang selling Penang Local Products.

Mizi Bristol seem to be doing well, the best in the New World Park Inside was full, and the table outside were also taken. No empty table. . . Starbuck is due to open there soon. Business seems to be booming here.

Tanjung Bunga Night Market

As mention in my previous post on Night Market, each individual Night Market have its own character, and even individual items sold there. At Tanjong Bungah, an Important Town in Penang (the Chief Minister Constituency for the past 8 elections i think) with 4 International class hotels, the TAR college, the Pasar Malam here have a more international flavour.

Located at all around Tanjung Bungah Market, along its service roads and carpark, This Night Market operates from 7pm till 10pm on Tuesday Nights only, and offer different selection of Stalls and better quality of product from my earlier post of Night Market at Val D'or. Below are a few snapshots of food products found here.

At the Market Food Court, you can find Hong Kong Chee Chong Fun, prepared fresh and right in front of you. A difficult dish to prepared as we have to steam the dough in a steamer together with its stuffing of Prawns or Char Siew (BBQ pork), and then transferred to a marble slap for it to be rolled. It is then Cut and plated, and topped with a soya sauce dressing with Chillie paste. Normally found where tim sum is serve in restaurant, this dish cost just a affordable RM2 per plate here. It may not be the best, but it is close to the best.

Frankie Pizza, a top Penang Base Franchise Pizza, from way back, started around 1990, now have a few outlets in Coffee Shops as well as in Night Market. This is Pizza Malaysian Style, with Mayonnaise. At this night market here Pizza comes in a Van with a built in Oven and it is bake fresh (from prebake pizza base, to cut down the preparation time)

Penang is know for its Poh Piah, or unfried Spring Roll, (same ingredients as fried spring roll but with a "fresh" wrapper. Here in the above Picture we have the Malays Version of this dish. Quite High Fiber / Healthy as it incorporates steam vegetables with turnips, cucumber, carrots with various flavoring ingredients such as chillies paste, or fried mini shrimps.

Here we also have a Pet "Shop" with various assorted pets for sale.

a Upmarket KL franchise pow, have also open up, cannot remember the name, but it start with B. This stall have various special pows such as Ocean Delight and as such. Other Stalls like VCD, Sunglasses, Vegetables, Fruits, and other Food Stalls are available here as well. Parking is terrible, as the Night Market is located on the Parking lots, and the early birds park at the unused bus station. I usually have to park on the main road, and walk in to the Market. May be our Chief Minister can look into this problem.

Macalister Road, Chicken Rice

One of my favourite meal is Chicken Rice. For me it must be steam chicken (not roasted or fried). Along Macalister Road (further away from town) next to the Grand Paradise Hotel, there is a Chicken Rice Stall that have long been a favourite of mine, however due to it's location in town is not a place i visit frequently.

Parking is easy. The Shop is not too busy and one can easily find a seat. And more importantly the Food it self. The Steam Chicken is smooth, comes with beansprouts (not common in Penang) the Rice is Fragrant and Not Oily, and the soup of the day is nice and have some substance.

Tanjung Bunga Market

A Market as a tourist site? Well you will never imagine it but The Tanjung Bungah Market is a tourist site for small group of Caucasian and Oriental Tourist. From time to time you will see a tour guide bring along small group of tourist into the Market.

Interior of Market

This market serve the Tanjung Bungah Residents as well as the Batu Ferringi Residents at times, and attract the Tourist coming to take a look on what is a market in Malaysia. My personal opinion is that the Street Market outside the Chowrasta Market in George Town gives a better “colour”. Here as well as the Chowrasta Market it is the outside stalls that are more interesting.

Build in tandem with the Tg Bungah Bus Station but did not suffer the same fate, the Tanjung Bungah Market is a busy place in the Morning. The Food Court there is well patronize thought the food is not exceptional except for the Char Koey Teow, the Chee Chong Fun, and the Soya Bean Milk. (See Lable Map, and the Char Koey Teow Post).

The unuse Bus Station is being use as a carpark especially on sundays. Note: the lights are still on at 10am in the morning. What a waste of electricity.

This food court is not to be mix up with the Lye Lye food court at Air Itam. This food court is located near Free School, Green Lane and offer a wide verity of food stall, (more then 30) and comfortable parking. It is custome build as a Food Court, with good ventilation, you can be quite comfortable here though the facilities are basic. The Toilet is usable though smelly at times.

I decided to visit this Food Court due to 2 reasons, one is because of the Tendorri Chicken and the other is the Pizza. On arrival I was disappointed, The Tendorri Chicken stall is no more. This is a problem at this place, around 25% of the food stalls keep changing hands.

We order various items as we arrive here late at around 9pm with out dinner.

BBQ Chicken Bishop Nose, My wife commented that it is tasty and sweet, BBQ perfectly.

Wan Tan Noodles dry, My order of Wan Tan with specification of extra dry and with only wantan came exactly as how I want it, Good taste, but not exceptional so.

Laksa, Good just the right amount of asam (sourness)

Koey Teow Th’ng, Good, only loose out slightly to the Pulau Tikus Market Koey Teow Th’ng with all the extra ingredients provided.

And of course the Pizza, a long wait but my daughter enjoy it, The pizza is the thin and crispy type, Malaysian style stuffing and with a good coating of cheese.

The food here is mainly good, even those stall that close after a time. This food court open from the morning, but with limited stalls. Most stalls open in the evenings and operates late. The food court will get busy at night after 9pm .
