A Market as a tourist site? Well you will never imagine it but The Tanjung Bungah Market is a tourist site for small group of Caucasian and Oriental Tourist. From time to time you will see a tour guide bring along small group of tourist into the Market.

This market serve the Tanjung Bungah Residents as well as the Batu Ferringi Residents at times, and attract the Tourist coming to take a look on what is a market in Malaysia. My personal opinion is that the Street Market outside the Chowrasta Market in George Town gives a better “colour”. Here as well as the Chowrasta Market it is the outside stalls that are more interesting.

Build in tandem with the Tg Bungah Bus Station but did not suffer the same fate, the Tanjung Bungah Market is a busy place in the Morning. The Food Court there is well patronize thought the food is not exceptional except for the Char Koey Teow, the Chee Chong Fun, and the Soya Bean Milk. (See Lable Map, and the Char Koey Teow Post).

The unuse Bus Station is being use as a carpark especially on sundays. Note: the lights are still on at 10am in the morning. What a waste of electricity.

DVD Recorder

Just Purchase a New Gadget, A DVD recorder that Records on CD type DVD R / RW for under RM400, Brand Name GC , Model Number DVR 7725, comes together with a Remote, a AV cable, and a DVD RW CD.

I have been eyeing this DVD recorder for a long time due to its pricing, It seems that only Carrefore Hypermarket is the only one selling this brand, and at this price. Last month they have a special offer, and the best part even after 4 visits there were no stock at the offer price and at the normal price above RM400. Yesterday when shopping for food stuffs, there it were and at a special offer price. I just grap it, there were only 4 number in stock.

Well I have not tested out the Recording Functions yet as such, but Setting it up was quite strait forward, require some brain power to figure thing outs, but not too bad, for those who has hook up a Video Recorder (VHS, or Betamax) before should have no problem with it.

Works the same way, Just that i have to look for a Eletronic Shop on a sunday to purchase the TV cable, to enable the TV to operate normally without switching on the DVD recorder.

Now I have to get a stock of DVD RW for taping and to keep any eye on the TV channels, (No Astro for me) , will try to hook up my other DVD player to it so i can record my Marriage VCD to the DVD format, if that is possible.

To get up to this area you have two choice, Taking the incline lift (on the left of the old temple) will cost per person RM4/-, 50% discount for child, Or drive up the steep road to the Goddess Statue. We choose the drive up as it would be convenient for us to go back.

Warning: Don’t take this drive lightly, it is steep and narrow with steep blind turns where only one car can pass through. Keep in 1st gear only and drive slowly with a hand on your parking breaks.

As this is my third visit, I did not have any difficulty in getting up. Again RM2/- parking fees apply per car. Up here the Main Highlight is the Goddess Statue, work to build a roof to protect it from the elements are on going.

A Carp Pool with a Pagoda type Gazebo over it, Feed the Fish Here, Fish food is available for the Souvenir Shop in small packets of RM1/- each. You are requested to recycle the plastic packet by returning the packets to the shop.

The Path way to the temple is line with statues of the Chinese Horoscope Animals.

and of course the Incline Lift Arrival Area which house another souvenir shop which is run by the temple. They claim that all profits are for the temple maintenance.

Donations are being source to upgrade the temple, to me it seems to be a never ending progress, one may purchase bricks, stones, roof tiles and you can write your name on it.

It was a burning hot day, We consume around 6 600 ml Drinking Water, 7 cans of Soft Drinks in between 4 Adults, 1 Child and 1 Toddler. in a matter of 2 hours. I think i will time my next visit earlier or later in the day.

As mention it was a quite Sunday, I notice some Thais, and 2 Malay Muslim ladies walking about. We then when to the wishing bell, and then onwards to the Pagoda, and we climb up the steep stairs to the top to admire the view.

One of the Premier Tourist Site in Penang, Malaysia.

My Sister in Law (my wife sister) and her husband were in town from Singapore (where they work) and express their wish to visit Kek Lok Si Temple to perform their prayers, So on this quite Sunday, after lunch we arrive at the temple. We decided to drive up to the temple directly, as to avoid the climb as well as the difficulty in getting the car park in Ayer Itam Village.

Kek Lok Si Temple as view from Car Park Now a days Kek Lok Si Temple can be divided in to 3 parts (name accordingly by me). The Outer Temple (Old temple), the Pagoda and the New Temple, and the latest Goddess of Mercy Statue.

Part 1, is the journey to the Outer Temple (Old Temple) or the original temple. As we have by pass the climb up the steps, we arrive at the Vegetarian Restaurant / Souvenir Shop Area. By the time we arrive my little daughter is asleep, so I have to carry her up around 100 ft to the Outer temple proper. At least i am spared the first 100ft by driving up. Imagine climbing up the steps carrying the largest bowling ball a sleep in your hands.

Car Park cost RM2/- per car, other then that this part is free. At the temple proper, going to the right is the way to the Pagoda, and going left is the way to the Goddess Statue via the incline lift. There are souvenir shops at both sides.

This food court is not to be mix up with the Lye Lye food court at Air Itam. This food court is located near Free School, Green Lane and offer a wide verity of food stall, (more then 30) and comfortable parking. It is custome build as a Food Court, with good ventilation, you can be quite comfortable here though the facilities are basic. The Toilet is usable though smelly at times.

I decided to visit this Food Court due to 2 reasons, one is because of the Tendorri Chicken and the other is the Pizza. On arrival I was disappointed, The Tendorri Chicken stall is no more. This is a problem at this place, around 25% of the food stalls keep changing hands.

We order various items as we arrive here late at around 9pm with out dinner.

BBQ Chicken Bishop Nose, My wife commented that it is tasty and sweet, BBQ perfectly.

Wan Tan Noodles dry, My order of Wan Tan with specification of extra dry and with only wantan came exactly as how I want it, Good taste, but not exceptional so.

Laksa, Good just the right amount of asam (sourness)

Koey Teow Th’ng, Good, only loose out slightly to the Pulau Tikus Market Koey Teow Th’ng with all the extra ingredients provided.

And of course the Pizza, a long wait but my daughter enjoy it, The pizza is the thin and crispy type, Malaysian style stuffing and with a good coating of cheese.

The food here is mainly good, even those stall that close after a time. This food court open from the morning, but with limited stalls. Most stalls open in the evenings and operates late. The food court will get busy at night after 9pm .

A traditional Malay Breakfast Dish adopted by all Malaysians of various races, you will find Nasi Lemak every where, and in which every style you want, for Breakfast, Lunch, Tea, Dinner, Supper.

Basically it is Rice cook in coconut milk, serve with a Chilly Sambal accompanied traditionally by Deep Fried Anchovies, and Peanuts, other accompaniments are fried egg, boil egg, fried chicken, sambal chicken, squid, chicken curry, kangkong, and the list just goes on and on and on. Usually serve as a set or to your specification, Bungkus (wrap) in banana leaf or now in plastic and newspaper or serve on plate or other utensils in restaurants.

Price anywhere between RM0.30 (Alor Star, Year 2005) to RM30/- in 5 Star Hotels Restaurants. It is a food that is for the poor as well as the rich.

In the town of Sungai Bakap at Penang Mainland, Just opposite the Market, there is a Nasi Lemak Stall, that have an exceptionally good Nasi Lemak, Fragment, with the right amount of Lemak (richness) with out being jelat (too rich) and you can have it Bungkus to your specification, or purchase the prepack ones. The Squid Sambal, Ikan Belis Sambal is again exceptional. Give it a try. Takeaway only, Breakfast, Morning.

New World Park revisited.

My father suggested that we take mum to New World Park for its disable friendly premise after our Ching Ming activities. Arriving at 12 noon it was still very quite with plenty of parking space and table. Again Friendly car park attendant / security guards were in attendant, My Mother did not have any problems in getting to the table. So did others who were using clutches. Again it was nice and breezy at the food court, thanks to its design.

First off we got some tim sum, there were only 5 types left, it’s tasty but hard but it may be due to the time as the tim sum was from early morning.

Next we tried the Oyster Omelets, we ordered the RM10 per dish, look beautiful but tasted blend, even the chilies sauce provided did not help to improve it.

My wife took the asam laksa, her current favorite, said it is not asam (sour) enough. My two kids took the Yam rice and yong tau foo.

My brother took the Curry mee, which was ok and our maid order pasembore

It must have been an off day for most of the cooks here. I did not take any thing except for ice kachang, not because of the not so tasty food but because I was too tired running around. I forgot to ask for the Durian Ice Cream to come with the ice kachang.

Well it was a quite disappointing trip for us here, we have either order the wrong items, or from the wrong stall or at the wrong time. But dont get me wrong, Food here is still much better then some other places but it was not up to our expectation on this day, the only thing is our Expectation may be a bit too high and that it was the cooks off day.

We all decided to give it a try again at another time and also to try out the original coffee shop, as we usually take our meals there formelly.
