Federal Place/Theater Char Koey Teow

This Char Koey Teow Stall use to be at the Maybank that is near Lorong Kulit, where is a sign that say Kimbley Street Char Koey Teow, Now having move here there a Sign here that Say Ah Leng Char Koey Teow.
The Coffee Shop
Located not too far away from the Padang, Police Station at Datuk Keramat, the Stall is at a coffee shop just opposite Federal Theater or now what is now know as Federal Place along the main road George Town heading to Ayer Itam, Parking is hard to get.

The Stall (Right in front)

The Char Koey Teow here is as pricy at the one in Lorong Selamat, RM5 per plate normal and RM8 ++++ for special. The fella here use duck egg, and this stall is open for lunch. As with the price, what you get is extra big prawns. It is just as good as the stall in Lorong Selamat, without that long of a wait.

But to me it really a place i come too often, I bring out station big spending friends here as they are impress with the big prawns.

Lorong Selamat Char Koey Teow

Reputed at the Best Char Koey Teow in Town, a blog recently comment that the stall move shop just a few shop a way in a new coffee shop, As i was in town and need a urgent fix of char koey teow, i drop by and try out the new shop.

Now is this the original char koey teow? I am a bit, 50 50 to say either way, though to me it that this stall have loss some taste, but it look like the same person cooking it, and charcoal fire is use. I only been here once. It's still good, (dont get me wrong) but a bit lacking in taste on this day.

I like the new coffee shop though, its clean. I had the normal Char Koey Teow which is 50% more then what us penangite usually pay for char koey teow. ;-) as the special is just only extra prawns and stuff. A bit disappointing is the lack of Cockles. which to me is the highlight of Char Koey Teow.

How to get here?, simple, look for the UMNO Building, or the Pakistan Mosque, Lorong Selamat is just next to the UMNO Building.

.

I will need to confirm by trying out the stall at the original shop.

Ayer Itam Char Koey Teow ( Kg Bahru)

This is one of those old time Char Koey Teow stalls we (my family) use to frequent, I started to have Char Koey Teow there 25 years or more ago. That when my Grand Parents still stay in Ayer Itam. After my Grand Parents move, we still have our Char Koey Teow fix there.
After I stated working (in Penang) it was a weekly affair, a 20km drive, a hours plus wait for the 2 plate of Char Koey Teow to start off my off day right. When I started working in other places it got less frequent but it was still a must every time i was in the area at the right time.
Location: Main Road to Ayer Itam, just before the roundabout where you can either go to Ayer Itam or Penang Hill, there is a Row of Shop House on your left. On one end it is anchor by May Bank and the other by this 3 story Coffee Shop, (owner is a Indian) named “Laisia” Restaurant Or some thing like that. It’s the only 3 story shop in the block. And it a corner unit. so you cant miss it. There is also a fruit stall at the side.
Parking: Horrible, I usually turn into the small lane beside the coffee shop and hope for the best, drive along the lane and turn right (if you cannot get a place earlier) along this road there will be some space but it is a longer walk.
Char Koey Teow Standard: Excellent, 90% rating, During this tasting trip, quality still there, 2 large prawns much bigger then 50cents coin, and more then 1 cm thick, however less aromatic. No pork crotons.
Time: Breakfast till Lunch
Pricing: $$, RM4 per plate with egg as against the usual price of RM2.80 a few shops away.
Waiting: Use to Take one hour plus for your Plate to arrive (9am), in fact I use to order wantan and tim sum to take the edge of my hunger pangs as well as getting a newspaper to read. Usually sold out by 1pm. Today surprisingly no waiting required, which may account for the not so aromatic plate as the Wok, may not have enough “heat” to do it’s job properly, usually the first plate is a bit off.
Note: one of the few coffee shops with this drink.
Note 2: The Mee Mamak at this coffee shop, is also one of the top mee mamak in penang, Lunch & tea time only.

New World Park revisited 2.

It was time for us to revisit New World Park for the Penang Street Food there. It look like the other parts of New World Park will be open quite soon looking at the activities going on there.
What i like about this place is it's clean toilet, and easy parking and decent food (in general).
This time i decided to give the Char Koey Teow a try. Well what good about it is Large Prawns, Banana Leaf under liner and it was fragrant. Give it a 90% rating. What i did not like is the current trend of less salt and the guy did not get it done my way, but that is personal taste.
To cool myself down, I took the ice kachang, lots of goodies in it.

Char Koey Teow Malay Style

Char Koey Teow Malay Style definitely means one thing, no pork, However up North here Malays Char Koey Teow can mean another thing. (Picture Below is another thing). Normal Char Koey Teow is usually found in Coffee Shops, food court and so on. Malay Char Koey Teow is usually found is Open Air Warongs (Small Road Side Coffee Shacks), and in mainly malay areas.
Needing A Fix of Char Koey Teow one night lead me to this Warong located opposite the South Masjid of Sungai Bakap, Near the hospital. This warong operates at night and charge RM2.50 for a plate for Fried Koey Teow (Not fried to me) that was swimming in a Prawn, Chillies and Egg gravy (Like Hor fun), but surprisingly tasty, Good enough for me to have 2 . When I was around in KL and in the south, I cannot find this version of Malay Char Koey Teow.
The total damage for 5 plates, 3 drinks came up to RM14.50. Give it a Try, Halal

BM Street Food

BM Street Food.
Finding Good Street Food at Penang Mainland, is always a big problem, So find a place with quite reasonable food in a big event by it self.
Located Near the Saint Ann Church in Bukit Mertajam near the turn off to BM Country Club (Caltax Station is your landmark) is a collection of "Food Shacks" which is clasified as Street Food, With among the Best Char Koey Teow, Laksa, Pasembore, and Mee Goreng Mamak style on the Penang Main Land. It wont be easy to find, but if you are in the area and looking for food, you wont be disappointed.
Name of Restaurant : No Name.
Location: Main Road out of Bukit Mertajam towards Kulim at the turn off to the BM Country Club. Caltax Petrol Station.
Type of Food : Char Koey Teow, Laksa, Mee Goreng (mamak style), Pasembore, Rojak, Coconut Water
Category: Street Food
Price : Cheep Penang Price ($)
Parking : Just don't park on the Main Road
Time : Afternoon Only
Non Halal Food (Char Koey Teow)
Halal Food (Mee Goreng, Pasembore)
The Pasembore and the Mee Goreng is located at the 2nd "Shack", run by malays, and is popular enough for you to have wait for your mee goreng. What special here is the Special Kuah which contains Dry Sotong, Aromatic to me, but Bitter in taste to my wife. I enjoy the Kuah, which is use for both Mee Goreng tambah (add) sotong (cutter fish) and the Pasembore, A type of Indian Origin Salad of Jullian Turnips, Carrots, Cucumber with various Fritters, with boil potato and egg added. RM2.50 (see picture above)
Laksa, (Rice Noodles in Spicy Sour Fish Gravy, topped with Prawn Paste) available here is good enough to fight it with the Penang Laksa Hawkers. In Fact a number of Laksa Stall in Penang Island loose out to this stall.
Char Koey Teow here, well i would rate it at in the 65%, which is far better then most char koey teow on the Main land, but below average on the Island. Edible to cure my addiction to char koey teow in an emergency situation.
Warning !!!!!! for City Folks.
As Mention this foods are located in 2 Food shacks, along the Main Road, Do not expect any amanities such as wash basin, toilet, fans etc. It is a Shack, with Plastic Table and Chair on earth floor, real street food at the purest.
For Drinks here you have a choice of Coconut Water Ice in Glass, or Coconut Water with out Ice in Glass or Coconut Water in Coconut. The Real MaCoy not the fake coconut water nowadays in preprepared coconut. The Nuts are unloaded and cut here, on your order.
Finally, Give the Rojak Here a Miss.

Char Koey Teow at Tanjong Bungah Market, Penang

Another of my regular spot for Char Koey Teow is located at the Tanjung Bungah Market, Food Court, not too far way from Jalan Sungai Kelian. This Food Court operates in the Morning only, for breakfast. The Tanjung Bungah Market is located behind the Unused Tanjong Bungah Bas Station.

Tanjung Bungah Market, Food Court Char Koey Teow Stall This Stall features a verity of other fried items such as Hor Fun. Usually that is a sign that the Char Koey Teow is not so good, however unexpectedly this stall is in the top 90% of the Char Koey Teow in Penang. Come at the wrong time, expect a wait of around 30 mins. Full of aroma, and flavor, and the best is when you want to customize your plate, you will get what you want.
My Special Order of Large, no prawns, extra cockles, extra chilly, cost me RM3.30 per plate. To top it off, head to the back of the Market, and purchase some Roast Pork to go with this dish. This will fill me up till 3pm.
Origins: Operated from the Concorde Estate Market (10+ years), in a hawker cart offer.
Location:
Tanjung Bungah Market,

It operates only at night from 6pm onwards to around 11 or thereabouts, and offers a wide verity of street food from carts. It was transferred, to this location around 15 years back. Char Koey Teow Stall

Koey Teow Th'ng Stall

Other notable items at the area: Satay, Lok Lok The Satay is special because it is produce by a Chinese man and offers Pork Satay, and Pork Intestine Satay among others. When ordering Chicken Satay you will get the usual sauce. When ordering Pork Satay you will get a special satay sauce which is Chinese base, less spice, but taste about the same but starch.

Pork Intestine Satay & Chicken Satay with the Usual gravy.

Lok Lok, is basically steamboat, except that the food is on skewers, there is a pot in the center of the table (there are specific tables for this), you cook the raw food by plunging the skewers in to the hot water in the pot, and dipping it into your own sauce. Note: of late there seem to be lesser and lesser hawkers offering this dish try it while you can.
