Nasi Ayam from KFC

Now a days Fast Food Chains is looking at the humble chicken rice or nasi ayam as a potential money spinner. You have the Chicken Rice Shop, Ayammas and now we have International Kentucky Fried Chicken serving up this dish.

Why? I suppose all Malaysian eat chicken and like rice. KFC version of chicken rice is their basic set, but instead of the salad and mash potato, they give you the chicken flavoured rice, and chicken soup in a set with their fried chicken.

I tried it out, no a bad combination, it should do well, with one clause, the rice have a plasticky flavour to it? How come, No QC Check? KFC should look into this seriously as is spoiled everything. The rice was nice a flavour full, though adding a extra rice cost RM1.50/- but for that plastic taste and smell. Urg! I don't think i will be back for more of the Colonel Chicken Rice

Chicken Rice

A Popular food among malaysians, as most malaysians can eat chicken and rice is the staple diet. Now Fast Food Chains are trying to cash in on this trend. The Chicken Rice Shop (earlier post) d0es it quite well. So I was game for more Fast Food Chicken Rice when my wife said let try this one out.

This reputable Fast Food Chain have a few different sets, We took the 2 person set, and took our seat, Food was brought over within 10 min. So far so good. The Chicken (Roast), Rice, Chillies Sauce, Beansprouts, and Beancurd. All for below RM20/-.

Well all was good and delicious, but for me it was a let down due to the chicken. Its over cook, and dryish. Dont get me wrong, the chicken was serve warm and delicious, just that i feel that it's was way overcook. Not my day i think.

D’ Concord Chicken Rice / Noodles / Porridge

Not to far away from the Tg Bungah Café Chicken Rice is another Restaurant that serve Chicken Rice though with more variation and add on, much quieter coffee shop, but much more pricy.

One fine day when the Tg Bungah Café Shop is jam pack, I decided to give this place a try (after 3 years I think) Verdict; Food is good, no jam, spacious, however pricier then normal. 3 order of chicken rice (Mix), with a plate of oily vegetable, and drinks came to RM25+, however for the comfort available as compared to the other place, it is much more relaxing, and frankly speaking its worth te extra you pay.

Tanjung Bungah Café Chicken Rice

Location: Jalan Lembah Permain (near the Tungku Abdul Rahman College and the Deaf and dumb school) in Tanjung Bungah Concord Area.

Tanjung Bungah Café caters for the Tungku Abdul Rahman College crowd. It is usually jam pack during lunch over, and every one seems to be heading for the Chicken rice, so either come early or late if you want fast service, or prepare to wait and share your table.

Now on this day I was late around 2.30pm and hungry, even then it was a good 15 min wait before my order arrive. I have double rice, a portion of chicken and braised chicken leg, which cost me RM5.90. (piture below)

Now this Stall is the offshoot of the one in Tanjung Bungah Village, and the owner have learn his stuff well. Nicely cook juicy Chicken, aromatic rice cook to perfection, superb soup, and the Braise Chicken Legs just melts in your mouth all topped with the wonderful chillie sauce. .

Chicken Rice @ Sg Bakap

Chicken Rice on the Penang Mainland is about the same as on the Island. While passing through Sungai Bakap New Town during lunch time I decided to stop by for lunch at this coffee shop which is next to a Chinese School.

Location: Off the Main Trunk Road, Next to a Chinese School, 2nd Row of Shop House, is this 99 Gamelan Coffee Shop that have a pretty good chicken rice.

Parking: Big Parking Lot JUST IN FRONT.

The Food: Pretty Good Chicken Rice, Rice not Oily, Fair Size portion of chicken, no complains, only the gravy was a thicken soya sauce grave that i did not like, Chille was the green chillie version made from small green chillie.

Pricing: $ RM3.00 for a standard portion. Slightly Higher.

Tanjung Bungah Market Chicken Rice

I drop by for my usual Char Koey Teow for breakfast, but it seems that Char Koey Teow stall is close fot the day, so what else, my second favorite food Chicken Rice, this stall version of Chicken rice consists of Tender succulent Steam Chicken topped with Black sauce, Fragrant Rice, White Cabbage Soup and superb chillie sauce. And all for only RM2.80 per portion.

Open during Breakfast & early lunch only, Close Wed.

Fast Food Chicken Rice

Can a Fast food Chain produce chicken rice equivalent in taste and product as good as the Normal Coffee Shop Chicken Rice? (if we ignore the price factor)

I decided to give this question an appropriate test. I have know about The Chicken Rice Store for quite some time (from my days running around in KL) and I have seen their outlets up here in Penang in Tesco (shop) as well as in Carrefour (food court outlet). I selected the Carrefour (prai) outlet and steam chicken it will be.

Ambiance of the Outlet: It beats all the Coffee Shops flat, Air con, nice chairs, nice tables, beautiful decoration.

Price: At RM7.13 inclusive tax per serving of Chicken Rice it is pricy, for a Penangite as it is more then double the RM2.80 – RM3.00 we pay for our chicken rice here in our coffee shop, but to be fair the portion is larger. For Some one from KL or JB who is use to RM3.50 upwards for their chicken rice it is not to bad.

What do you get: Per serving of Chicken Rice you get one portion of rice, one portion of Chicken (about one and the half time more then what you will get in penang, about the same as what you will get in KL), and the soup with Chillie and what I assume to be the ginger sauce.

Presentation: Nicely presented, much better then coffee shop, however two items, plate for rice is small, and plastic cutlery. Ever try to each chicken with bone using plastic fork and spoon of the low cost type? Well it is an experience I do not enjoy nor do I wish to repeat.

The Taste Test:

Chicken: Steam Chicken, smooth, very nicely done. Certainly not to my expectation, and beat many other shops and 5 star hotel. (100% score) .

Sauce: Adequate (80% score) the sauce is not to my liking however as I find it too light. Taste was fine.

Rice : Has the yellow colors and it is fragrant and aromatic, again beat many other shops (100% score)

Soup: Wow! Nice Tasty Soup, with vegetable and chicken inside. (120%)

Chillie Sauce : 100%, thick and spicy,

Conclusion

It seem that The Chicken Rice Store can at least for this outlet, produce chicken rice to match the Coffee Shop Chicken Rice, The also give the 5 Star Hotels and Restaurant a good run for the money.

The Chicken Rice Store in Carrefour Prai, score 500% out of a possible 500% in the taste test, thank to their soup which compensated for the sauce. Will I come back again? well to me the turn off factor is a. Price b. the plastic cutlery (could it be that I was seating in the food court section that they give me the plastic cutlery? ) Try removing the flesh from the bones with a plastic spoon and fork.

Malay Chicken Rice

Ever had Malay Style Chicken Rice? The Main difference from Chinese Style chicken rice is that they offer one type of Chicken which is Fried Chicken, with Chicken & Margarine Favoured Rice, with a Herbal (Soto) soup and chillie sauce which come directly out of the bottle. Thai Style Chillie sauce which is usually sweet.

Usually found in stalls all over malaysia, but there are even a chain of Nasi Ayam Melayu in Penang call Misai Nasi Ayam or Mustache Chicken Rice. I had Lunch in the Juru outlet a year back with a friend.

A notable difference is that the chicken serve is usually dryish to those serve in the chinese outlet. This is one of the many "Chinese" dish that the Malay customise to suite their likeing and to their taste. Give is a try you may find that you like it.

This café feature Keat Sing Coffee Shop chicken rice, Keat Sing was the Coffee Shop of Penang, (its still there) famous for its penang food and of course chicken rice.

Back to this Seventy Five Café, Located at Atrium B, of Prangin Mall, cannot remember which floor, but its not non the Ground, first or Top floor. It is a typical penang coffee shop located in the Mall. Catering more towards local, it feature a typical verity of penang food. What special about Keat Sing Chicken Rice? The smoothness of the Chicken and its chillie sauce. At Seventy Five Café this Keat Sing Chicken Rice offshoot live up to its name. This order came with roast pork and charsiew.

Best for lunch.

This coffee shop prepare their own herbal and soya milk drink.

Fatty Loh Chicken Rice

What so good about Fatty Loh Chicken Rice?

At one time around 20 years back, they use to sell 400 chicken in a day. At that is operating during lunch only, and in a coffee "shack" the size of 10 cars park side by side. That how good it is, or shell i say it use to be.

History of Fatty Loh Chicken Rice

I was first introduce to Fatty Loh Chicken Rice way back 30 years ago, when my father purchase our family house in Tanjong Bungah. During our weekly visit (my father was working in Alor Star at that time) to the house for gardening work, we will have our lunch here, and when my father was transferred back to Penang Island, we will have lunch here twice or even three times in a week.

Fatty Loh Chicken Rice at that time was in a coffee "shack", the size of 3 cars park side by side. and from there on grew in size to 10 car park side by side as mention above. It was Located at the Junction of Fetty Park Road, with the Main Tanjong Tokong Road, till Ivory Group purchase the land and started to build their complex.

That was the time where Fatty Loh Chicken Rice Split in to a few place with each of them claiming to the Original Fatty Loh Chicken Rice, all of them operated by the one of the Children of Mr Fatty Loh.

One of them move to a place at Tanjong Tokong before going back to Fatty Park, The other move to Pulau Tikus and now to Nagore Road. And if i am not mistaken there is one in Falim, Ayer Itam.

This Post is about the Nagore Road outlet. Open not to long ago, this is a upmarket outlet serving slightly pricy ($$) chicken rice in a newly refurbish shop house. Cost for a Chicken Rice here is RM3.80+ thigh meat (Service charge applicable) , which you can get in other place around RM2.80.

What Special Here?

One of the Few Chicken Rice Shop (from it original Days) to serve Chicken Blood Pudding, Chicken Intestine (particularly rare) with it chicken rice.

The day we were there, the Special is a Salted Fish Bone Curry which to my humble taste buds were superb, The item above the curry is the Blood Pudding. Soft and Nice

Portion of Steam & Roast Chicken, (soft and smooth - both types). Total Cost for lunch for 2 adults 1 Kid 1 toddler, came up to RM30. (4 portions of chicken, 1 blood pudding, 1 large curry salted fish, 3 rice, 3 drinks) The Meal came up to my expectation, but i was slightly disappointed that the chicken intestine was not available. We came for lunch at 12 noon.

Also available now a days are Roast Duck, Roast Meat, Chicken Koey Teow Soup which was not available during the old days. Give their chicken porridge a try, it's good.

Macalister Road, Chicken Rice

One of my favourite meal is Chicken Rice. For me it must be steam chicken (not roasted or fried). Along Macalister Road (further away from town) next to the Grand Paradise Hotel, there is a Chicken Rice Stall that have long been a favourite of mine, however due to it's location in town is not a place i visit frequently.

Parking is easy. The Shop is not too busy and one can easily find a seat. And more importantly the Food it self. The Steam Chicken is smooth, comes with beansprouts (not common in Penang) the Rice is Fragrant and Not Oily, and the soup of the day is nice and have some substance.
